Rest Day at Demopolis

October 12, 2015

We decided that we needed a day off, and Demopolis Yacht Basin is a great marina to lay up for a day or longer.  Some people plan an extended stay since many insurance company rates go way up if you are south of Demopolis before November 1st, the official end of hurricane season for the southeastern US.  At least one of the boats we have been traveling with is staying for a month while her owners go back home for a break.  Our insurance company, Boat US, has been good about explaining how time of year and location will affect our insurance fee, and the “penalty” for going south of Demopolis sooner than November 1st is actually pretty minor for us.

We took care of some boat projects that we had been wanting to get done.  Rob fashioned a fuel collection device to attach to the fuel vents during fueling.

Fuel collection device will be tested at the next fuel stop
Then he finished changing out the automatic fire extinguisher in the generator room,

filed down some sharp bolts on the captain’s chair which had already caused several limb-threatening injuries,

Well, maybe before modern cleanliness and antiseptics
and together we modified the scooter cover so that we could have it on while the scooter is strapped down.

Boy that industrial Consew machine is sure handy!

I finished up the blog entry for yesterday and got it posted since we have good internet.  Sasha got several walks, Frisbee sessions, and dinghy rides, so everyone felt good about the things that were accomplished.

The Bar B came in to dock late afternoon, and Bob and Barbie invited us over to visit.  Since they have made the trip from Kentucky Lake to the Gulf coast of Florida many times, we asked for any tips or advice they could give us.  Boaters are always happy to share their experiences, especially if they think it will help someone else out, so they got out their books and charts and went over anchorages, marinas, and routes with us.  We really appreciated their advice and hospitality.  They even let Sasha aboard to visit, even though they have 2 cats.  George, an orange calico, had lived with a dog before, so he eventually came over to Sasha and they sniffed noses for quite a while.  Jessie, a gray tiger-stripe, was shy but surprised Bob & Barbie by coming up to see Sasha – he got fairly close but eventually hissed at her and backed off.  Sasha was well behaved and just went along with whatever the cats were doing.  I should have taken pictures but that would have probably upset the dynamic.

Sasha is expecting her late walk and possible Frisbee session by  street light if the coast is clear of other dogs, so I’d better wrap this up.
